Students should be able to identify some shapes based on their defining attributes. A mini lesson may be necessary in order to introduce or review some of the vocabulary words the students will utilize in the lesson.
Teachers should use their professional judgment when deciding if this is necessary for their particular group of students. Using the white board, teachers can model congruent, right angle, parallel, vertices, sides and attribute.
Once modeled, the teacher can ask the students for examples from around the classroom of each vocabulary word. What are the guiding questions for this lesson?
How does the number of vertices relate to the number of sides? What makes a rhombus use various geometric shape here different from a rectangle?
Describe a hexagon or any geometric shape to the class so it can be drawn by the students without using the name of the geometric figure. How will the teacher present the concept or skill to students?
The teacher will ask the students for different shapes and will draw one on the white board to discuss the various attributes of that shape.
If a Smart Board is available, utilizing its drawing features will be beneficial. A document camera can be used instead of drawing on the white board if available. If a square is shown on the board, the teacher will ask: The students will discover that they need to be more specific and will come up with another attribute of the square such as: Again leading the class to see the more specific details are needed.
This discovery process can continue until the class decides that they need to be extremely exact with their description by saying something like: What activities or exercises will the students complete with teacher guidance?
The teacher will use the opening activity of "The Geometric Matching Game" having the students find their partner based on the description of their shape. Once the students demonstrated their prior knowledge, the teacher will have students use small white boards and teacher will describe a shape to the students.
The students will draw the shape they feel is being described by the teacher using the different attributes in the description. Once the drawing is completed, a discussion with the class will take place about why that particular shape was drawn.
